The Buckingham Presbyterian Church will kick off its 11th season of its popular annual Fish Fry this Friday.

"Buckingham Presbyterian is a smaller congregation of about 120 members," Georgette Lundquist, a member of the church who started the fish fry with her husband, said. "We started the fish fry in April 2009 to help bring some money to our church as we have a lot of seasonal residents. After 2009, it just became a seasonal event and we are doing the fish fries from November through April every year the first Friday of the month."

At 4:30 p.m. the first fish fry of the season will be held Friday, Nov. 1, at Buckingham Presbyterian Church, 4241 Buckingham Road, Fort Myers. The fish fry will be held until 7 p.m., or until the food is gone. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for a half portion for children 12 years old and younger.

The meal includes an 8-ounce fried Basa fillet, a very mild white farm raised catfish cooked in canola oil; coleslaw; baked, or green beans; dessert, one per person, and a drink. The drink includes coffee, iced tea, lemonade, or water.

"It takes about 40 people as volunteers to help set up, cook, serve, clean up and make desserts," Lundquist said.

The fish fry typically attracts between 250 to 400 people depending on the month. The biggest fish fries are during January and February with more in attendance.

The money raised goes towards the church, as well as some of its mission programs, which include Mission Penial, a migrant farm workers organization in Immokalee, Beds for Kids, ACT, Salvation Army and other charitable causes.

Buckingham Presbyterian Church has a Sunday service at 10 a.m. with an adult Sunday Bible study at 9 a.m. Lundquist said they have a nursery during service for children up to kindergarten age.
