An afternoon of fun is planned for Lehigh Acres residents during the Lehigh Acres Fire Prevention Day & Fall Festival, co-hosted by the Veterans Park Recreation Center and Lehigh Acres Fire Department.

The free, family friendly event is being held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Veterans Park Recreation Center, 55 Homestead Road S.

Veterans Park Recreation Senior Program Specialist Tanya Ray said this is the second year they are holding the fest.

"Last year went amazing. We had, I believe, about 1,500 people show up," she explained.

This year, the fire department is coming in and giving out free hot dogs, iced-cones and popcorn.

The day of festivities will include a costume contest, starting at 1 p.m. for those 2 years old and younger; 3 to 5 years old; 6 to 8 years old and 9 to 13 years old.

"We are expecting several vendors to come and promote their business to let the community know what the county has to offer. They are giving out free candy," Ray said. "As of right now we have 28 vendors that will promote what they have."

She said some of the vendors and guests will include Florida Department of Transportation; Lehigh Acres Fire Department; Kiwanis Club; U.S Army; Headpin; Lee County Sheriff's Office; Girl Scouts; Advance America; AAA Auto Club; Costco; OneBlood Bus; Staywell; Century 21; Fennig Team; Lehigh Acres Rotary Club; Florida Forest Services and Christ United Methodist Church.

Some of the anticipated exhibits will include aerial, brush truck and ambulance on display; extrication demonstrations; bunker gear dressing station; blood pressure checks; glucose testing; Marshall from Paw Patrol; fire hose demonstration; martial arts demonstration; Pink Heals, DUI simulators and concussion goggles.

"Last year we had two helicopters land. We are looking to have that this year as well for people to look inside the helicopter," Ray said.
