Busy Barkingham Dog Park to close temporarily for improvements

Barkingham Dog Park, located inside Buckingham Park in Fort Myers closed for improvements Monday, and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 7, weather permitting. During the two-week closure, three new water fountains and ADA upgrades will be made to the park at 9800 Buckingham Road.

According to Tim Engstrom, Lee County spokesperson, in addition to the three new dog fountains, the sidewalk is being replaced in order to be ADA compliant and a new fence will be installed.

Barkingham Park opened in November 2001, and since then has become a neighborhood favorite among dog owners in the area.

Olivia Kirsten and Mario Oden are regulars at Barkingham and have brought their sheepdog, Bodie, for years.

"We really like coming here and the majority of people that come with their dogs are super friendly and the dogs seems to all get along," Kirsten said.

This dog park offers two fenced in, off-leash play areas for large and small pets, doggie water fountains, agility equipment and a dog rinsing station. One unique feature to this park is its great on-leash, dog-friendly hike that takes visitors around a lake and off-road path.

"I like to take hikes with our dog along the pathway. It lets us come out and enjoy getting some exercise, too," Oden said.

Although patrons of Barkingham will miss going to the park while it undergoes renovations, they are extremely happy about the new water fountains and sidewalk repair.

"Some of the fountains don't work, so it will be nice to have brand new fountain stations for the dogs," said Kirsten.

All amenities at Buckingham Park, except the dog park, will remain open with regular hours. Buckingham Park amenities include baseball fields, fishing, hiking trails, picnic shelters, restrooms, football and soccer fields and a playground.

The closest off-leash dog parks to Buckingham Park are Paws 4 Duty at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres or Pooch Park at Judd Park in North Fort Myers. For a complete list and to learn more about other area dog parks, visit leegov.com/parks/dog-parks.
