Does your youngster need something to do this summer? The Veterans Park and Recreation Center offers two programs for those who are 3 to 5 years old.

Rec Center program specialist Nancy Zukaitis said she used to do the Pee Wee Gym and Pee Wee Picasso classes for the youngsters until Angie Rosario took over the class.

"She is great," she said.

Both Pee Wee Gym and Pee Wee Picasso is offered every Thursday.

Pee Wee Gym, $20 per month, is offered from 11 a.m. to noon. The class provides the youngsters with the opportunity to run around, do various ball activities while learning how to throw and catch, tumbling, working with hula hoops and sharing.

"They learn their balance and coordination and to be social with other children their age," Zukaitis said, adding that they also learn to be respectful of each other.

There is a max of 14 kids per class, due to the space of the room and the age of the children.

Pee Wee Picasso is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. It is $20 per month. The art based program is also taught by Rosario. The youth are taught how to cut and paint using all different mediums.

"One week they may be cutting things out. The next week they are making things with clay, or toilet paper rolls," she said. "It helps them to learn how to glue, cut and paste and follow directions and be in a situation where they are with other kids doing fun things."

There is a max of 12 kids that can register for this class, due to spacing and the age of the children. Zukaitis said the instructor likes to know how many children she will have in advance, so she has the correct number of supplies needed.

Individuals must be a member of the Veterans Park and Recreation Center to participate in the programs. There is a one time, lifetime, fee of $10 per individual, or $25 for a family of three, or more.

"Once people become members to our facility, they can come and use it during weekends during open times," she said. "If we don't offer something, they can look at North Fort Myers, or Estero. If they are already a member they can sign up there (for the program.)"

To register, call (239) 369-1521, visit www.leegov.com/parks/centers/veterans, or stop by 55 Homestead Road South.
