"This will be the first time I have spoken directly to the community since I have been elected and worked for a few months," Gittens said. "I said when I was running for office that I wanted to do regular town hall meetings. I would love to see not just parents, but community members and taxpayers and citizens of the area, so they can come out and hear some of the things that are going on and ask me questions."

The meeting will begin with Gittens providing an overview of what has happened in the school district since November. One of those will include the time she spent "Reading Across America" in the classrooms, a book about a little slave boy who finds freedom.

"It was a real good experience. I love going back (to the classroom). It grounds you and helps you remember and realize why you are sitting up there," she said of the dais during board meetings.

Gittens said she does not want to spend a lot of time talking at the beginning of the meeting.

"I want to understand the community's needs and desires," she said.

It is all about transparency.

"That is why I want to be in the community and answer questions and see what their needs are," she said.
