Veteran's Park Recreation Center in Lehigh Acres has opened registration for its upcoming summer camps.

According to Veterans Park Community Center Supervisor Rebecca Flora, camps fill quickly, so early registration is suggested. Summer camps are broken up into two age groups and are offered on a weekly basis

"We already started registration for our traditional and middle school summer camps. Parents or caregivers can sign up online or in person. Each person registering for camp will need a facility membership prior to registering," said Flora.

The 2019 Summer Camp will run from June 10 to Aug. 2. The camp weeks are divided as follows:

Week 1 (June 10-14), Week 2 (June 17-20), Week 3 (June 24-28), Week 4 (July 1-5, no camp July 4), Week 5 (July 8-12), Week 6 (July 15-19), Week 7 (July 22-26), Week 8 (July 29-Aug. 1)

Those interested in attending can register at Lee County Parks & Recreation online or call (239) 533-7440. A Recreation Center lifetime membership is necessary for each summer camp attendee, cost is $10/person or $25/family.

"We offer two camps in the summer, our traditional camp, which consists of completed kindergarteners through the fifth grade. There are 120 slots open for this camp. Then we have a middle school/teen camp for grades sixth through eighth, which has 40 open slots," said Flora

Traditional Camp is a full day of camp activities including: arts and crafts, sports, organized games, quiet play, educational speakers, water activities, outdoor activities and field trips. To ensure safety, staff-to-camper ratio is 1-to-15 or less. Campers get a chance to participate in numerous outdoor activities, as well as indoor and outdoor programs. Camp fees include field trip costs.

Veterans Summer Camp Director Nancy Zukaitis will oversee traditional camp. Phone: (239) 369-1521.

"Traditional camp directors decided to do a sports theme this year. Every week they will focus on a different sport. We also offer water activities and take field trips to the nearby Williams Pool. At least three big field trips will take place during the summer camp," said Flora. "We also bring in guest speakers. Last year we brought in a guest speakers from Lee County Animal Services and a demonstration by Lee County Sheriff's Canine."

The second camp, Veterans middle school/teen summer camp, is for school age children in the sixth through eighth grades who will participate in "non-traditional" activities geared toward individual interests. Each camp offers a weekly theme that will focus on a particular topic. Activities will be tied to the theme and include indoor and outdoor activities, games, guest speakers, adventures, swimming and field trips.

Veterans Teen Summer Camp Director will be Tim Berti. Phone: (239) 369-1521.

Summer camps are $75 per week, per child and run eight weeks; June 10 through Aug. 2.

According to Flora, Lee County Parks and Recreational currently has open positions for this summer's camp.

"We are looking to fill a couple camps counselors' positions in both camps at Veteran's Park. Anyone would like to apply can go to our website, Lee County Parks and Recreation, to see a full job descriptions and apply.

Summer camp sign up and information can be found online at www.leeparks.org or by calling Veteran's Park Community Center's main number (239)369-1521.
