Farm Share, an organization out of Homestead, is making a stop in Lehigh Acres Thursday, providing the community with the opportunity to take advantage of a mobile food pantry.

The Farm Share Free Food Distribution is being hosted by state Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, House leader Dane Eagle, Rep. Ray Rodrigues and Rep. Spencer Roach. The distribution will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 28, at Lehigh Community Services, 201 Plaza Drive, Ste. 3.

"It's a big first-come, first-serve walk through distribution of food. I'm sure we will serve a couple hundred people," Lehigh Community Services Executive Director Carolyn Peplow said. "They bring a big truck, a mobile pantry, and we set all the stuff out on tables. It includes breads, sweets, fresh produce. The staples like peanut butter and jelly and tuna."

Those who attend will be asked to sign into their log and provide their basic information.

"They don't have to have their ID," Peplow said.

She said they have had a few Farm Share Free Food Distribution days at Lehigh Community Services.

"It's my third one since I have been here," Peplow said.

One was held immediately following Hurricane Irma, with another early the next year.

Farm Share, established in 1991, is a dedicated nonprofit organization who recovers, sorts, packages and distributes nutritious food to those in need. The organization distributes more than 6 million household food packages a year, which totals 40 million pounds of food to Florida families.
