Lehigh Acres Rotary fest set for March 2

February 27, 2019
By MEGHAN BRADBURY (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Lehigh Acres Citizen

Join the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club for its Rock Blues and Brews event next month at Copperhead Golf Club.

Co-Chair Debra Shuman said they have hosted the event for seven years in November right after their Scream on the Green event. Having two events so close together was wearing folks out, so they decided to move it to March.

"This year we decided to do the event itself and have some live music and food," the Rotarian said.

Rock Blues and Brews will be held from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Copperhead Golf Club, 20910 Copperhead Drive in Lehigh Acres. There is free admission to the event.

Individuals are welcome to bring can food donations for Lehigh Community Services.

"If someone wants to help out it's fine, but it's not a requirement," Shuman said.

The event will include performances from a Rotary band, Hit N Runn, a local Lehigh band Live N Learn and a band from the Sarasota/Tampa area, BACKTRACK Blues Band.

Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets, as the seating will be off to the side of the Copperhead Golf Club clubhouse in the grassy area. She said they picked the grassy area, so it's a nice, easy area to sit and relax and enjoy the evening.

Coolers are not allowed at the event, as the Rotary Club will be selling hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, soda and water. Suncoast Beverage will provide cold brews. Shuman said white and red wine will also be available.

Raffle prizes will also be available during the event.

"We have had some things donated by the community," she said, adding that one of the prizes is a week stay in Delray Beach. "It's another perk of being there and being able to participate and enjoy the evening."

She said the Rock Blues and Brews event is a perfect afternoon and evening to bring the kids out while enjoying some food and music.

The money raised from the event will go towards a number of local projects the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club provides for the community.

One of which is the free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners they provide at no cost to the community. The dinners are offered at St. Rafael Catholic Church. She said they served close to 600 dinners for both holidays.

Another project is dictionaries for third graders at Lehigh elementary schools and thesaurus for fourth graders, again at elementary schools in Lehigh.

In May the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club also provides free tickets to a baseball game. She explained that the ticket provides free admission for a child, as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The club also offers scholarships for high school students at East Lee County High School.

Shuman said to help the Rotarians make decisions about things that affect their lives every day they apply the Rotary Four Way Test. The test includes: "Is it the truth. Is it fair to all concerned. Will it build good and better friendships. Will it be beneficial to all concerned."
