The Sons of American Legion Squadron 323 will host its annual "Super Bowl" fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 p.m. Before the game, attendees can partake in a pot-luck buffet, bid on tons of items from the silent auction, and win raffles, and giveaways.

The legion will also hold its first annual chicken wing cook-off earlier in the day.

According to American Legion Squadron 323 First Vice-Commander, Christian Rapp, the event is open to the public and they are still taking entries for the contest.

"This is the first time we are doing the chicken wing contest and the last week for people to sign up. The deadline is Jan. 27. Anyone who wants to compete can come into the legion, sign up and fill out the form. The entry fee $40," said Rapp.

The chicken wing cook-off is from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Following the cook-off, the public can do a tasting and then the judges will make their final determinations. Awards for the contest begin at 4:30pm.

"The early portion of the day is open to the entire family, but the 'Super Bowl' party, which begins at 5:30 p.m. is geared towards adults," said Rapp. "There will also be a silent auction later in the day. Local businesses donated items for the auction including car washes, haircuts and certificates from local restaurants and a few Fort Myers Beach vendors' gift certificates," said Rapp.

The American Legion has hosted its big game party for more than 30 years. All funds will go to the Fisher House Foundation, which is responsible for building comfort homes where military and veteran's families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. The homes are located at military and VA medical centers around the world.

"It's a great foundation that provides housing for these veterans families and take some of the stress away while there loved one is going through a medical procedure. Our goal is to open a home close to a veterans' hospital in every state," Rapp said.

The American Legion has various groups within their post that host a variety of fundraising events throughout the year.

"Our auxiliary does a school clothing and supply drive for under privileged kids each year. In March, we will have a wine and paint event that the public can attend as well," said Rapp. "The public is also welcome to visit us for meals during the week. We have lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinners are from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and we offer a breakfast on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m."

A signup sheet for the buffet and chicken wing contest can be found inside the lobby of the American Legion Post 323. The post is located at 1124 Ashlar Ave. in Lehigh Acres.
