Dreikorn announces candidacy for Lee County Commission

Long-time Pine island resident and Fire Commissioner Dr. Michael Dreikorn announced Monday that he is running for County Commissioner District #1 in the 2020 election. District 1 is currently held by retiring County Commissioner John Manning.

"I've been a Pine Island resident since before Hurricane Charlie in 2004," Dreikorn said. "I believe I can help bring Lee County where it needs to be with regards to infrastructure, water quality, property rights and sustaining the 'Old Florida' feel of Lee County."

Dreikorn, originally from southern California, joined the military at 18 years old and traveled the world. While working in Hartford, Connecticut, Dreikorn found Pine Island on the Internet on a Wednesday, flew down on a Saturday, bought a house on Sunday and moved to the island 3 weeks later.

"Six months after moving here, Hurricane Charley destroyed my house," Dreikorn said. "I could have taken the insurance and lived someplace else but I wanted to stay on Pine Island and I'm glad I did."

"I decided to make my announcement at the Matlacha Bridge because the bridge and the waters are symbolic of some of the problems we are facing," Dreikorn said. "District 1 is an important district because it includes most of coastal Lee County. As you know, Lee County has struggled with its representation, especially in the coastal and unincorporated areas, for several years and I mean to change that. What we need is an active commissioner to get things done."

The election for the seat will take place in November 2020.
