Friendship Club to begin at Senior Center

October 31, 2018
By MEGHAN BRADBURY (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Lehigh Acres Citizen

A new club will launch next month at the Lehigh Acres Senior Center, offering a buddy system - a chain of people - one can reach out to when in need of companionship.

Dottie Fourneir said she suggested the Friendship Club because she felt there are a lot of times when people are alone.

"This is not a dating club. That is not the purpose of it. The purpose is for single seniors to help each other," she explained. "We want to set up a buddy system, or a chain, where we can check on people who might be living alone to make sure they are okay and what their needs are . . . helping people who are alone."

The Friendship Club will kick off Thursday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Lehigh Acres Senior Center, 219 Plaza Drive.

"They would need to be a member of the Senior Center in order to get involved with it. It's $30 per person for 12 months to join. There are no fees for this club," Fourneir said. "It's probably going to be member generated as to what the needs are. What do you think you need as a single person? What are the problems you might have?"

Those needs, she explained can be something as simple as helping move a piece of furniture, making plans for lunch, or dinner, catching a movie, or someone to talk to every once in awhile.

"A lot of times seniors who are alone are not used to being alone and don't like being a third wheel with couples when going out," Fourneir said. "It gives them a chance to meet another person in the same position."

Her hope is that the Friendship Club will grow and people will become open to the idea.

"I think that is good emotional support for people," Fourneir said.
