As of Monday, parents have the opportunity to pre-register their child for kindergarten and avoid the long lines that tend to happen in January during open enrollment.

School District of Lee County spokesman Rob Spicker said the kindergarten pre-registration provides an "early period and extended period" for parents to register their child.

Instead of parents lining up outside the door in January, they have the opportunity over the next six weeks to stop by at their convenience between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The pre-registration period opened Monday, Oct. 22, and runs through Friday, Nov. 30.

"They do not have to come back during the crowded open enrollment period," Spicker said, which takes place from Jan. 14, through March 1.

Pre-registrations can be done at 360 Santa Barbara Blvd., N., Cape Coral; 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers; and 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207, Lehigh Acres.

Students entering kindergarten in August must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2019. To pre-register parents must bring a physical exam (dated within the last year); Florida Certificate of Immunization; proof of address; original birth certificate; Social Security card (if available) and custody documents (if applicable).

This year, 5,867 students started kindergarten at the 45 elementary schools in the District, not including charter school enrollment.

The district expects to help between 1,000 to 1,500 parents during the kindergarten pre-registration period.

"That would be a huge advantage to them and a big burden (taken off) our staff the first part of the year when we open up enrollment," Spicker said.

The parents who take advantage of kindergarten pre-registration will be given a student number, which will provide access to login information come January. During November, December and January, a number of school open houses are held for potential students.

"Go visit those schools and pick out those you like," he said, adding that he encourages parents to rank their choices online in their order of preference.

Once students are in the system, and gradate to sixth grade and eighth grade they will receive a notice of how to register online.

"Those who apply online find out a week earlier than those who mail in their application," Spicker said.
