The Lehigh Acres Senior Center Golden Shell Boutique, which is open to the public, has a great assortment of useful items the community can purchase at very low prices.

"We are now the main support for the center, which really gives us the impetus to keep getting out good stuff," said Linda Dillon, Golden Shell Boutique manager.

Although the Golden Shell Boutique has been well established for many years, Dillon didn't became a part of the operation until approximately five years ago.

Then when she and another woman took it over three years ago, they shifted the focus from crafts to household and clothing items, providing useful inventory for their customers.

"We have received a lot of wonderful donations. Fantastic things. Quality items. Pieces of clothing that come in with the original tags still on them, so you know they have never been worn," Dillon said.

The Golden Shell Boutique is run by volunteers, one of whom is Assistant Manager Marcia Townsend.

"We have a lot of fun and it's hard work sometimes. We have great pleasure in bringing these items out that have been donated to us," Dillon said.

The assortment of items include such things as clothing, small household appliances, glassware, paintings and knick knacks that can be displayed on walls and shelves. She said the collection also includes a plug-in neck massager and two sets of china.

"A lot of people are downsizing at this point in their lives, so we are getting beautiful stuff," Dillon said.

When the donated items come into the Golden Shell Boutique, Dillon said they mark them with a specific color.

"That is considered the color of the month. This month (June) we are using yellow. Last month (May) our color was brown and the month prior (April) to that was blue," she explained. "Our yellow and brown are very low full price. Our blue is half price."

Dillon said they are having a special on all of their clothing, half price, which puts the items at super low prices.

The idea behind the color coded merchandise is it keeps the boutique rotating stock on a very regular basis. The blue items that are still at the boutique at the end of the month will be donated to the community, or a church in North Fort Myers that aid a large number of individuals who are homeless.

"We try to be good stewards of merchandise," Dillon said. "We honor the item that is given and the person that gave it."

Donations can be dropped off at the Lehigh Acres Senior Center during the Golden Shell Boutique's operating hours. She said if the boutique is not open and Director Melissa Berry is there, she will take the merchandise.

"There is always someone there to help if they have large things. We are glad to help them get it in," she said during the boutique's hours.

Donation receipts are available for those who wish to take them for a tax right off.

The Golden Shell Boutique is holding a special event from July 17-20, Christmas in July.

"We will be featuring all kinds of Christmas things at nice prices. We invite everyone to take advantage of those buys," Dillon said. "We have some beautiful stuff that has come in. This is the third time we have done Christmas in July. People really enjoy it."

The Golden Shell Boutique is open to the public. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Tuesday, which has extended hours to 6-6:30 p.m.

"We enjoy our community coming in and seeing what we got," Dillon said.

The Golden Shell Boutique is located inside the Lehigh Acres Senior Center, which is at 219 Plaza Drive.
