Grand opening to be held for SalusCare center

The new SalusCare Center will hold its grand opening Thursday to celebrate the dedicated space for children and families who have behavioral healthcare needs.

"It is something we have talked about here for a little bit of time now," spokesperson Todd Cordisco said of their new Center for Growth building. "We heard from the community that families don't want to sit in the same waiting room where we have our adult patients."

With their Ortiz campus having 12 buildings, one of which was essentially empty, a team began taking a look at the space to see how they could retrofit it and turn it into the Center for Growth, he said.

The new center, located in Building G, was a former adult residential facility.

"SalusCare was fortunate to possess some restricted funding available for children's services so this became the seed money we needed to initiate this project," Cordisco said. "There are still items on our wish list and opportunities for donors to support this new comprehensive center for children and families."

The 4,443-square-foot space includes two full-time child psychiatrists, outpatient therapy for children and families, children's case management, the Community Action Team, and Therapeutic Behavioral On-Site Services. The new space will include 11 offices dedicated for patient care.

"We are doing a lot with the space," Cordisco said.

The grand opening open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. May 31, at 2789 Ortiz Ave. in Fort Myers. A ribbon cutting will be part of the festivities. The event will include speakers, a provider and possibly a patient, as well as sharing what the Center for Growth means.

Tours will also be offered.

Those who wish to attend the grand opening are encouraged to RSVP to tcordisco@saluscareflorida.org.

"I encourage the community to come out and see what it is we offer," he said.

The following Monday, they will open their doors for business and start seeing kids in the Center for Growth.

Those who would like to seek services are encouraged to call the Welcome Center phone number, (239) 275-3522, where customer service representatives will help in setting up appointments.

Those who are new patients will be directed to the Access Center, which is a free service where the children will receive an assessment.

Cordisco said if an appointment is needed, they will be referred potentially to a psychiatrist, or outpatient therapy.

Cordisco said he has heard time and time again that there are no services offered for children in the area.

Fortunately, that is not true, he said.

SalusCare has provided services for children for many years. During the 2017 calendar year they saw 2,300 children.

"We are putting services in one building and making it as convenient, welcoming and warm as possible," he said. "We are here and we are ready to serve the community's needs, especially when it comes to children's behavioral healthcare needs."

SalusCare is a merged company - Lee Mental Health Center and Southwest Florida Addiction Services, which took place in 2013.

"We had about 75 to 80 years of combined experience," Cordisco said, at the time of the merger.

The not-for-profit mental health and substance abuse service provider accepts most insurances and offers a sliding fee scale based on household income.
