Parade set for Saturday

March 7, 2018

It's time once again for Lehigh Acres residents and out-of-towners, to be entertained during the 44th annual Lehigh Acres Spring Festival. This year's theme is "The Wild, Wild, West" and will feature an opening ceremony, parade and daily festivities, which begin on Friday and run through March 17.

The festival will open Friday with a ceremony and live entertainment and then kick off at 11 a.m. Saturday with a grand parade. The will be led by the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District and feature an array of floats, classic and antique cars, and local organizations, all of whom will make their way down Homestead Road from Beth Stacey Boulevard to Veterans Park, the festival site.

The opening ceremonies, set for 6 p.m. March 9, will include the National Anthem and an introduction of sponsors and dignitaries.

According to the Lehigh Spring Festival Association President Bob Dutka, the parade is being sponsored by SCP Enterprises and throughout the years has drawn large crowds that line the route.

"We have a lot more community vendors coming out this year to participate than in past years," said Dutka.

This is the fourth year that Dutka has volunteered to organize the Spring Festival and first year as president.

"This is a community event that's separate from the county. All non-profit. The only way we can continue to hold the festival every year is with the community's support. Everybody involved is volunteering their time," said Dutka.

This year's festival will feature traditional events including: a barbecue cookoff; bubble gum blowing contest; horseshoe contest; festival pageants; pet show and a craft's show. For the kids, there will be plenty of old favorites to enjoy such as Nick's Kids Show, Commodore Cutter, Southwest Florida's Pirate and, of course, an assortment of carnival rides and games.

"Midway is bringing some new rides out this year and we have a great live performance line-up," said Dutka.

The Spring Festival Committee in Lehigh will also announce the name of the person to be named honorary mayor of Lehigh Acres on the final day of the nine-day festival. The "mayoral race" is a fundraiser and is won by whoever raises the most money for the local chamber and other charities.

The Spring Festival first started in March of 1975 and was originally held at the original Festival Grounds, which is now the Microtell Hotel. Local clubs and organizations sold their food and beverages from the current Flea Market building, which was also part of the festival grounds. In the late 80's, Spring Festival moved to Veteran's Park, where it has resided ever since.

Vendor space is available at no charge to any nonprofit organization. The festival offers many opportunities for local organizations to raise funds, by helping with parking, carnival ticket sales, grounds cleanup, etc.

Admission is free. Ride wristbands to cover all nine days, unlimited rides, are $60.

Veterans Park is at 55 Homestead Road S.
