Dual action: Campus security measures and gun safety legislation

February 28, 2018
Lehigh Acres Citizen

To the editor:

Clearly, we need increased security at our schools. There have been numerous suggestions on social media about how increased security measures like fences, armed officers and metal detectors would make the schools too much like jails.

I have questions.

How do the inner city schools maintain security? Why doesn't anyone care what THAT looks like? Are we going to insist that suburban schools remain less protected because we prefer the optics?

And why do we only have to do one thing? How about we secure our schools with nothing in mind but the safety of the kids AND pass gun safety legislation, including regulations like we have for vehicles, mental health funding and tools for law enforcement when they find a dangerous armed person.

It's a big list, I know, so everyone needs to get going and work on it.
