General Woman’s Club to award five scholarships

February 14, 2018
By MELISSA BILL (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Lehigh Acres Citizen

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres, Inc. will be awarding five, $1,000 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home. Each applicant must be currently enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school.

According to Diane A. Lashua, Scholarship Chairman of General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres, the scholarships were originally awarded to high school students, but the organization saw a greater need among single parents. So in 2009, the organization began giving the scholarships to single parents attempting to go back to school.

"This year we were able to raise the scholarships from $750 to $1,000 dollars," said Lashua.

The money that comes from each scholarship goes directly to the school on behalf of the student's tuition and books.

"We try to get the word out by notifying the colleges about the scholarships, who then place a posting about it on their website. Many times the counselors at the school know who might qualify and then notify those students directly. We also place it in the local newspapers," said Lashua.

Lashua became a member of the General Woman's Club about seven years ago and is grateful to be part of the scholarship fund raising initiative

"We do a variety of a variety of fund raising activities including fashion shows, tea parties, a silent auction; church quarter auction and book sales. Besides finding funds for the scholarships, we work locally by collecting goods during the holidays and donating to Hope Hospice and families who suffered losses during Hurricane Irma," Lashua said.

Scholarship applications guidelines are as follows (there is no pre-printed application form):

3. Single Parent with minor children living at home.

4. Name of College, University or Technical School in which you are currently enrolled.

5. A brief biography that includes your area of study.

7. Awards will be issued on May 18, 2018.

Scholarship recipients are also invited to be guest speakers at one of GWC's yearly events.

"It's a really nice feeling to hear from individuals who have received scholarships and went on to have successful careers and to see the smile on their faces," Lashua said.

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres was founded in 1961 and currently has about 80-90 members.

According to Lashua, all the money raised by GWC's Lehigh chapter stays in Lehigh Acres.

"We try to find ways to give back to the community. Our theme is working and serving together," said Lashua

GFWC will be hosting a fashion show which will help raise funds for the scholarship.

The Fashion Show and Luncheon event will take place on March 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Palm Golf and Country Club.

Fashions will be provided by Trader Ricks. There is a $30 donation fee for advanced tickets. People can also reserve an entire table during the event.

"This event tends to sell out quickly, so those interested should reserve seats now. We usually have about 170 in attendance. We also have a 50/50 raffle during the event and will give out gift baskets donated by Reflections Salon of Lehigh Acres."
