Investigation warranted

To the editor:

I would like to thank Sen. John McCain and the Armed Services Committee for choosing to investigate the army's mental health waiver.

The statement was made in the committee that "we cannot sacrifice quality for quantity." In a general sense we did that in 1973. We chose to reward the haves with freedom and sacrifice those we had neglected. We continue that practice for the next 45 years.

It is sad that we would choose to sacrifice the mentally ill we had often sadly neglected already (without mental) treatment.

We must also solve the problem of the army's discharge of many veterans with known mental issues who are then left without recourse.

It would be good to know the real story on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Our armed services certainly need an injection of character.
