Harry Chapin Food Bank puts out call for Thanksgiving turkeys
The Harry Chapin Food Bank is asking the community to donate 3,000 turkeys so those in need can have a Thanksgiving dinner.
The food bank has purchased $37,500 in gift cards at $10 each to distribute to families via partner agencies. The cards are designated for the purchase of food at local supermarkets for holiday meals.
The gift cards are often more economical and efficient for clients, because they can purchase their turkeys, chickens or other Thanksgiving food at the sale prices offered by the stores, making their dollar stretch further.
Natural disasters place an even greater strain on those who may not know where their next meal is coming from. Hurricane Irma has limited the resources of many individuals in the region, and the long-term aftermath of the storm will likely result in higher costs for food, rent, insurance and other expenses of daily life.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank is here to help. However, the food bank could only afford to purchase 3,750 gift cards.
Those who wish to donate turkeys or chickens can drop them off at the food bank’s Fort Myers Distribution Center or the new Collier County Center in Naples.
The addresses and drop-off hours are as follows:
– Fort Myers: 3760 Fowler St., open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 239-334-7007
– Naples: 3940 Prospect Ave., Suite 101, open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 239-334-7007
