Frustration with plant thieves

November 8, 2017

To the editor:

I work at the Lehigh Acres Post Office. I have been trying for a year and a half to make the property, especially the front of the building, look nice. I'm trying to plant nice shrubs and plants with color to make it look unlike an abandoned building like it did when I got there.

But here's the problem: People keep pulling my plants out of the ground and helping themselves to whatever plant they seem to like. On Monday, Oct. 30, I discovered the third plant missing from outside since I started planting - two have been pulled right out of the ground and one was hanging from a double hanger. They took the hanger right off the hook.

What possesses people to help themselves to things that aren't theirs? The post office is federal property and stealing from it is a federal offense!

I am just so frustrated and don't know what to do about this. A lot of people are enjoying the changes that I am trying to make and have commented so. I have even been offered by the garden club, as a part of "Keep Lehigh Beautiful," to help plant things, but how can I accept help and plants when people are stealing them?

I'm not sure exactly what this letter will do, other than possibly make people aware that I am trying my best to add some beauty to the post office. But I don't know how much more time and money I can spend on it, if plants keep getting stolen. I just don't understand the thought process of someone taking things that don't belong to them.

Thank you for listening.
