Lehigh church to host fundraiser for Puerto Rico

By Staff | Nov 8, 2017

As Puerto Rico continues to recover from Hurricane Maria that hit in September, organizations around the country are recognizing the need for donations.

The Church of God of Prophecy in Lehigh is hosting a fundraiser for Puerto Rico on Nov. 11-12.

“We are trying to see what we can accumulate to send to them,” Pastor Athensa Whittle said.

To raise funds, the church is asking local businesses to step up.

“We get donations from stores or what we’re able,” Whittle said.

They do not have a goal, but every dollar will help.

“We’re grateful for whatever we get,” Whittle said. “Whatever we get is sent.”

Asked why Puerto Rico is important to the church, Whittle points to the problems that are going on due to the hurricane.

“Because they had disaster,” Whittle said.

The church does not have ties to Puerto Rico through its members, but that is not stopping the congregation from doing what is in its hearts.

“We are God’s people,” Whittle said.

Whittle does not think it will be hard to raise money for Puerto Rico.

“We have always been blessed,” Whittle said, speaking of past fundraisers.

The Church of God of Prophecy operates in many countries around the globe and was started in North Carolina. At the moment, its headquarters is in Cleveland, Tennessee.

“We contact them,” Whittle said, talking about how the headquarters controls where the money goes and how the fundraiser works. “We follow instructions from the headquarters.”

Whittle is saddened by the shape Puerto Rico is in.

“It’s horrible,” Whittle said. “(My members) look to help. That’s what I believe a church is for, not just go on a pulpit and preach.”
