Rock painting event aims to show support for veterans

November 1, 2017
By ERIC DeVAUX (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Lehigh Acres Citizen

With Veteran's Day coming up Nov. 11, Mothers Empowering Other Women Inc. is teaming up with Lehigh Acres Rocks to throw a rock painting event for veterans.

Rock Our Veterans will take place on Nov. 4 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lehigh Acres Church of the Nazarene, at 210 Lee Blvd. Three rocks will cost a $2 donation, which helps to replenish the supplies.

"Fifty percent of the cost will go to a veteran in need," Kimberly Jacobs, founder of MEOW, said. "We will find a local vet, for example, that can use a little help in getting gas, then we could give him money to help him with gas."

MEOW is planning on giving the finished rocks to local veterans to show support.

"It's just a way, as me as a vet, to do something fun - we're going to take the rocks and give them out to actual veterans on the 11th," Jacobs said of Veterans Day. "There are some people that have never had the opportunity to know of anyone who has served. It's a great way to introduce someone that has never met a veteran face-to-face."

As a veteran, she knows how important support for service members is.

"Between my late husband and myself, we gave over 30 years combined together to the United States Army," Jacobs said.

She feels like there needs to be more recognition of the U.S. Armed Services.

"To show appreciation, especially in today's society," Jacobs said of why she helping to organize the rock painting event. "So much is taken for granted."

She explained that there are many things that soldiers go through.

"If you are not familiar with what happens when you go in the military, there's a lot more that goes on than what most people realize," Jacobs said. "Some vets have it harder than others."

She hopes that many people will come out.

"We do have a lot of veterans in Lehigh, let alone Lee County as a whole," Jacobs said. "We have those - the Vietnam era vets - that don't like the recognition because of the way they were treated. Some of them are slowly accepting little shows of gratitude without getting anger."

Rock Our Veterans will be the second event that MEOW and Lehigh Acres Rocks has teamed up for. The first one, Rock Out Domestic Violence, was held in October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Jacobs noted that the event raised $30.

"We're going to present the $30 and the rocks that we did to Ms. Jennifer at the ACT (Abuse Counseling & Treatment) shelter," she said.

She called the first event a success because it rose public awareness.

"A lot of people don't realize how much domestic violence is still a huge issue across America," Jacobs said.
