Sharing the Commitment conference set

The 6th Annual Sharing the Commitment conference will be held Oct. 21 at Estero High School, at 21900 River Ranch Road, Estero.

Hosted by the School District of Lee County, Collier County Public Schools, and the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System, the free event is for parents of children with disabilities.

It will entail a day of collaboration, advocacy and learning, which will include a keynote speaker, breakout sessions, and opportunities to connect with not-for-profit agencies and other parents.

Speaker Dr. Robert Brooks received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Clark University and completed additional training at the University of Colorado Medical School. He is on the Harvard Medical School faculty and served as director of the department of psychology at McLean Hospital.

His keynote session will describe the importance of identifying and reinforcing a child's "islands of competence" together with specific strategies that will nurture responsibility and resilience.

Brooks will offer a breakout session at 9:55 a.m. titled "Taking Care of Yourself so You Can Take Care of Your Kids," where he will outline a framework for parents to develop "stress hardiness" to deal more effectively with anxiety, frustration and burnout in order to lead a more purposeful resilient life.
