First round of hurricane relief funds released locally

In partnership with the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, United Way has distributed over $400,000 in supplemental funding from the SWFL Hurricane Relief Fund to the local network of direct assistance agencies.

The agencies include: Beacon of Hope, Bonita Springs Assistance Office, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County, Child Care of Southwest Florida, Community Cooperative, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva, Good Wheels, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Interfaith Charities of South Lee, Lehigh Community Services, RCMA - Hendry & Glades, Eva's Closet and The Salvation Army - Lee & Hendry.

The foundation initiated the fund with the United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades and Okeechobee Counties to create a giving fund to help in the aftermath of those affected by Hurricane Irma.

One hundred percent of the funds donated through the foundation will be used by the United Way to provide emergency funds to directly help people displaced from their homes and those suffering loss due to the hurricane and floods. The United Way works directly with Lee County Emergency Management and the network of nonprofit organizations to ensure a coordinated response.

Lee County issues permits

During the Hurricane Irma-disrupted month of September, contractors pulled 86 permits to build single-family houses collectively valued at about $18.8 million in unincorporated Lee County.

That compares to 178 permits issued in August 2017 and 127 issued in September 2016, according to the Lee County Department of Community Development.

Also, four multi-family units valued at about $600,000 were permitted, compared to 40 units in August 2017 and 41 units in September 2016.

General commercial activity was valued at about $9.9 million for 23 permits, compared with about $10.3 million in August 2017 and $16 million in September 2016.

Community Development issued 3,097 permits of all kinds in September.
