The American Legion Post 323 is going to open its doors to families, friends and potential new members Labor Day weekend, and the whole community is invited.

Located at 1124 Ashlar Ave., the post will have three days of food, music and activities all weekend long, with the goal of not only giving back to the community, but also to bring in new members.

Jessica Moore, a spokeswoman with the Legion, explained that the post always tries to do something special on the long weekends. This particular event, however, is to help get the word out.

"This is more of a membership drive and try to get people out here to see what we're all about," she said. "We'll have a lot of district and department dignitaries coming by to show their support."

On Sept. 2, the 8th Annual Sons of the American Legion Clam Bake and Family Fun Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will feature raw and steamed clams, along with hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage. There will be a raffle for a lobster and a horseshoe tournament with a $10 entry fee.

Christian will provide the music, followed by Bouncer Entertainment in the evening.

On Sept. 3, the American Legion Riders will host breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be a cornhole tournament with a $10 entry fee starting at 1 p.m., followed by a taco bar from 3 to 5 p.m.

Music will again be provided all day.

Over the weekend, there will be a bounce house and water slide for children.

The pool tables will also be open all weekend.

Proceeds from the first two days will benefit Fisher House and Special Olympics Florida.

"It just about coming out and having fun and enjoying yourself with everyone here," Moore said. "It's not about joining this Legion, but a Legion in general to be a part of the camaraderie of the veterans in the community."

On the final day of the holiday activities - Sept. 4 - the American Legion Auxiliary will serve up hobo stew and more from 2 to 7 p.m. Don White & The Country Band will perform starting at 4 p.m.

It will be Happy Hour all day, with discounted drinks.

According to officials, American Legion Post 323 has about 1,600 members, including the Sons of the American Legion, auxiliary and Riders. Of those, approximately 600 members are active members.

To become a full-fledged member, one must have served in the military during wartime.
