Council's Corner: Some simple ways to protect your vehicle from being stolen or broken into

May 24, 2017

Obvious but overlooked ways to keep your car and the contents from being stolen are:

- Keep your car locked at all times, even when driving.

- When parked, even for a few minutes, never leave your car running.

- Never leave your car running and unattended.

- Avoid leaving anything in your car where passersby can see them.

- Do not leave your vehicle title in the car. Too often a car thief is pulled over and gets away from police because he or she can produce the auto registration. (If multiple drivers us the vehicle, hide the registration in a secret place in the car that only the owners know about).

- Know where you are going. Avoid high crime areas even if the alternate route takes longer.

- Install an anti-theft system in your car. Thieves are reluctant to steal vehicles if they know the car can be recovered quickly. Many insurers offer discounts for the type of systems that lock the steering wheel, ignition cut-off systems that prevent a car from starting and a system that emits a signal that can be tracked by the police.

Thieves are in a hurry and all these suggestions are excellent methods to keep your car or its contents from being stolen.

A good start to protecting your car and belongings is lock your doors - help cut down on crime.
