Welcome to the neighborhood: Lehigh tavern offers family-friendly atmosphere

May 17, 2017

Murielle Lallave was looking to create a different type of neighborhood restaurant when she opened EmJay's Tavern and Grill in August 2015.

Originally born in Brooklyn, New York, Lallave moved from Puerto Rico to Florida in 2001 and worked in the service industry, eventually co-owning a bar in the Lehigh Acres area. When she struck out on her own, Lallave decided that she wanted her tavern to have a family-friendly atmosphere.

"There are a lot of dive bars and little clubs in Lehigh," she said. "I wanted to bring something different. A nicer experience, where you can bring your family."

"People had to go to Fort Myers or Gulf Coast (Town Center) for that before," Lallave said.

In that spirit, the restaurant hosts a number of community events, including the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce luncheons, Lehigh Acres Senior Citizens Center outings and groups from the local golf course.

Lallave said she really wants to build a feeling of community and is very grateful for the positive response she has received from area residents.

"We have had a great turnout from the locals and they have all been very supportive," she said. "It's kind of like a family around here. That's what I want it to feel like."

According to Lallave, the tavern is known for its Rubin sandwich, which is made from corned beef brisket that is prepared in-house. She also emphasized that all of the hamburgers are made of 100 percent, never-frozen Angus beef.

Daily specials, like the BBQ grilled pork chops and teriyaki chicken wrap, are posted on Facebook.

For example, there is a deli board night on Mondays, where customers can make their own sandwiches from a large selection of meats, cheeses and other topping for $5.99. On Tuesday nights, the Angus burger comes with a side of fries for $5.99.

Lallave noted that Friday is karaoke night, where everyone comes together for a good laugh, a good drink and a good meal.

EmJay's Tavern and Grill is open from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. At 700 Leeland Heights Blvd. W., the restaurant features a full liquor bar.
