Council's Corner: Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2017 in Lehigh

May 10, 2017

The Lehigh Acres Community Council would like to wish all of our graduating seniors big congratulations! This is a big transition in your life, and as part of the community we are excited to be part of your growth.

It is important to ask yourself, what will my days look like after high school? Will I further my education or go to a trade school? How do I want to participate in my community? Where do I want to live?

Having a plan is a big part of planning your life after high school and thinking about what services and supports you might need once you graduate. For example, what kind of supports you might need to get the job that you want and to lead an active and productive life?

There are many different agencies, programs and services available to help you reach your goals. Talk to your parents, the parents of other young people, teachers and other role models you look up to - the people you wish you could be like.

Walt Disney had a dream, made three little circles and now makes millions of people happy. A wish or a dream is an exciting start to a bright and happy future.

Don't have a dream? Try volunteering in your spare time. Not only does it have a positive effect on your community, it will help you make decisions about your own future. While volunteering, you will be exploring your interests, trying something different and learning about who you are.

You will find the groups and people you are working with have information and ways of looking at the world that can broaden your horizons. It is an eye-opening experience to realize that doing even small things can have a big impact on others.

To get the most out of your experience, ask yourself these questions before you get involved with an organization:

- What have I done in the past that I have enjoyed?

- What do I want to do as a volunteer, and what would I rule out doing?

- How much time can I commit?

- What talents or skills can I offer?

- What kinds of people do I want to work with?

- What would I most like to learn by volunteering?

In Lehigh Acres, we have a variety of organizations that offer ways to give back to the community. From the Caloosa Nature Center and working with senior citizens, to helping out at the Humane Society - there is a local organization looking for someone just like you. There are also many organizations that meet during the month. You can go to the "Calendar" section of the Lehigh Acres Citizen to find one that suits your interest.

Most important - stay safe during grad week!

The Lehigh Acres Community Council serves as the voice for unincorporated Lehigh Acres.

The council is looking for new members with new ideas and input. Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the LCSO East District substation, at 1301 Homestead Road N.
