Shredding event to help combat identity theft

The Lee Elder Abuse Prevention Partnership program will host its annual shred-a-thon today, April 12, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Lee County Election Center, at 13180 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers.

Participants are asked to remove paperclips, staples and binders.

If possible, limit boxes to two per person; no commercial shredding will be accepted.

A minimum donation of $5 per person is recommended with all proceeds to benefit LEAPP.

Gulf Coast Writers Association to meet

The Gulf Coast Writers Association will meet on April 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Zion Lutheran Church, at 7401 Winkler Road, Fort Myers.

Guest speaker Glenn Miller will share insights on his 40 years of writing and his recent novel, "Grabmore."

Republican Women's Club presents speaker

The Fort Myers Republican Women's Club will meet on April 18 in The Helm Club at The Landings Yacht Golf & Tennis Club, at 4420 Flagship Drive, Fort Myers.

A social hour begins at 11:15 a.m., with the luncheon and program following at noon.

Lee County Public Defender Kathy Smith will be the guest speaker. She will talk about mental health and drug courts.

The cost of the luncheon is $20.

General Woman's Club schedules meeting

The General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres will meet on April 21 at 1 p.m. in Sweatlock Hall at the Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 E. Leeland Heights Blvd.

Teresa Cancel, director of Fountain Crest Retirement Community. She will discuss the facility, its importance in the community and how veterans can take advantage of it.

LCSO to hold safety seminars

The Lee County Sheriff's Office will host a series of educational seminars at the United Healthcare Medicare Store, at 6900 Daniels Parkway, Unit 23-C, Fort Myers.

The following dates and topics are planned:

- May 2: Internet Safety for Seniors

- May 30: Aviation - How criminals are found from the air

- June 6: Active Shooter for the Community - What should you do?

- June 27: Agriculture Unit - How do they protect the animals?

- July 25: ID Theft - How vulnerable are you?

- Aug. 1: SS Benefits Hacking - Are your benefits safe?

- Aug. 29: Home Improvement Fraud - What you need to know

- Sept. 5: Residential Security - Are you a target for a burglar?

- Sept. 26: Cell Dogs - Meet the dogs and learn how they are trained

Each session will begin at 10 a.m. and last about an hour.

WWII veteran to speak on fascism in America

World War II veteran and Lee County resident Robert Hilliard will discuss "Fascism in America: Can it Happen Here?" on April 26 at 6 p.m. at the Lakes Regional Library, at 15290 Bass Road, Fort Myers.

Sponsored by Lee OFA Indivisible, the talk is free and open to the public.

A Columbia University PhD, Hilliard worked in radio, TV, theater and journalism, was chief of public broadcasting at the Federal Communications Commission and was a dean and professor at Emerson College.

Passport Week planned

The Lee County Clerk of Court and Lee County Tax Collector will host a Passport Weeks on May 15-20 on Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is encouraged to review passport information before coming to the office.

Community pool offers variety of classes

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open year-round.

A range of swim lesson skill levels are offered, including adult beginners; all taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors.

Eight classes for $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

Lifeguards-on-duty. Lap swimmers welcome.

Choir rehearsing

The Lehigh Children's Choir rehearses from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays at Cayuga Music Studio, at 1100 Homestead Road.

Lehigh Concert Band accepting members

The Lehigh Concert Band is always accepting new musicians who play at a senior high school, college level or above.

The band also offers a scholarship program to encourage young players to join.

Plant, tree sale set

A plant sale will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakes Regional Park, at 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers.

The selection includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, annuals, bromeliads, rose bushes and more.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer any questions.

There is a $1 per hour parking fee, with a maximum of $5.
