Several groups in Lehigh Aces are accepting applications for all types of scholarships.

The Cavaliers Domino Club, the General Woman's Club of Lehigh Acres and the Lehigh Acres Chapter of the American Business Women's Association are all offering scholarships to local students.

For the past 30 years, the General Women's Club has awarded over $86,000 in scholarships. According to officials, the scholarships only go to Lehigh residents and are awarded to single parents with minor children living at home.

"The club made the decision to grant scholarships to single parents going back to school since the need is there," Diane Lashua, scholarship chair for club, said. "It is so rewarding when we present the awards and hear about their appreciation and the need."

This year, the club will award five scholarships worth $750 each.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school and must be a resident of Lehigh Acres.

To apply, applicants must send proof of their residency, provide their street address and contact telephone number, the name of college, university or technical school where they are enrolled and a brief biography with their area of study.

The deadline to apply is April 14; the awards are issued May 19.

The local American Business Women's Association chapter will provide one $1,000 scholarship through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund. It is open to female students who will attend an accredited U.S. college, university or community school.

Started in 1998, the ABWA has paid out over $52,000 in scholarships since it began, officials reported. It promotes encouraging others to grow personally and professionally.

The ABWA holds fundraisers to raise money for the scholarships. This year, the club named the scholarship "The Onnadine Hosler Impact Scholarship," after one of its founding members.

"Providing scholarships to young women is one of our core goals," Judy Carter, chapter president, said. "A good solid education is one way to accomplish that, thus a reason for the scholarships."

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Lehigh, Alva or Buckingham. They also must be at least a college freshman by August, with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The deadline is March 31.

The Cavaliers Domino Club is offering $1,000 scholarships through the Louise Moore Scholarship Program. Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, have to have been accepted to an accredited college, university or vocational school, and must be a resident of Lehigh Acres.

This is the second year the club is awarding scholarships.

"We want to encourage young people," Lureen Slater, a club member, said.

"We would love to do more of it, but this is coming from members who pay their dues," she added. "We just want to do something for the community."

The deadline to submit applications is April 14.
