Urge county to pursue 20/20 purchase of Edison Farms

March 1, 2017
Lehigh Acres Citizen

To the editor:

As the League of Women Voters of Lee County, Florida was one of the founding members of the grassroots initiative, Conservation 20/20, we are very pleased that the Lee County voters in the 2016 General Election, by an overwhelming majority of 84 percent, agreed that the 20/20 Program should continue. Thank you!

Now we learn that Conservation 20/20 has an opportunity to purchase the 4,000-acre Edison Farms property. The purchase of this sensitive property, 80 percent of which is wetlands, is critical to maintaining our future water supply, protection against flooding of communities along the Estero River and Halfway Creek and protecting the water quality of Estero Bay. There is the additional advantage of maintaining the wildlife habitat of the area; the Florida panther comes to mind.

Unfortunately, very little of the Conservation 20/20 funds have been spent in the last four years. Now we have an opportunity to use those funds to great advantage. We urge the citizens of Lee County to contact our County Commissioners and our local legislative officials. Now is the time to encourage them to make every effort to purchase the Edison Farms property with Conservation 20/20 funds.

Clara Anne Graham

President
