To the editor:
What does the name "Planned Parenthood" mean to you? For many of us it's birth control and cancer screenings, for others it often times conjures up feelings related to your opinion about abortion. I challenge you to open your mind to the meaning of "Planned Parenthood."
According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of plan is "a method of achieving an end" and the definition of parenthood is "the position, function, or standing of a parent."
At Planned Parenthood, all people are provided resources necessary to make educated and responsible choices to determine when and if becoming a parent is best for them.
It tends to go unnoticed that Planned Parenthood empowers men by providing condoms, education, STI testing and treatment, and low cost vasectomies. Often overlooked, vasectomies are a permanent form of sterilization that is one of the most effective methods of birth control.
Locally, the outpatient procedure cost is under $500. There is no visible scarring, is less invasive than a tubal ligation and sexual activity can begin again within a week.
So next time you hear something about Planned Parenthood, please recall that the organization allows both women and men the opportunity to choose if/when to become a parent.
