Library system needs volunteers

The Lee County Library System is looking for volunteers from East Lee County and Cape Coral for its Community Conversations Project.

The project trains volunteers to facilitate stimulating discussion groups with older adults at assisted living facilities and adult day care programs.

The library is looking for adult volunteers who have friendly, outgoing personalities; experience facilitating discussion groups or the interest to learn; and a love of reading and a desire to share that.

Volunteers commit at least four hours a month after the training.

The speaker is Dr. Mongi Zekri, a Southwest Florida multi-county citrus agent. He will explain basic homeowner citrus care, including citrus greening.

Membership from April to September is $10, plus a $10 Lee Parks and Recreation membership.

Bring a cup for free coffee and tea; also consider bringing something to share with the group.

The General Woman’s Club of Lehigh Acres will meet on May 20 at noon in Sweatlock Hall at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 E. Leeland Heights Blvd.

There will be a potluck, as well as the installation of new officers for the upcoming term.

Scholarships will be awarded, along with donations granted to non-profit organizations.

The VegHeads 4-H will present seed saving basics on May 28 at 1 p.m. at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road.

They will explain why to save seeds and basic terms, along with beginner techniques for lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and beans/peas.

Free guided historical hike tour available

Celebrate Memorial Day with a free, guided historical hike on May 28 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Buckingham Trails Preserve, 8790 Buckingham Road, Fort Myers.

The preserve, a Conservation 20/20 preserve, includes remains from the Buckingham Army Air Field’s Flexible Gunnery School, a training base operated by the U.S. military during World War II.

The 1.5-mile roundtrip hike will be guided by historian Jim Zbick, with the Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library.

Remnants of the military’s ground moving target ranges and shooting platform foundations can be seen onsite, as well as an elevated berm that once served as part of the military supply railroad which delivered goods and supplies from Fort Myers to the air field.

Suggested items to bring include a water bottle, hat, sunscreen and camera; wear closed-toed shoes appropriate for hiking.

Parking is free.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

There are lifeguards-on-duty. Lap swimmers welcome.
