Scott: No more excuses

October 14, 2015
By MIKE SCOTT , Lehigh Acres Citizen

Refusing to share information regarding the rampant violence directly and indirectly tied to the Dunbar community is unacceptable. I continue to hear excuses like "fear of retaliation" and "distrust of law enforcement."

When reminded of the fact that the Crime Stoppers hotline is completely anonymous, I have even had folks say that they don't trust that option either.

In addition to increased law enforcement presence and pressure on criminals, we have a variety of community outreach initiatives underway.

Starting this week, deputies working in and around Dunbar will be providing people with a mechanism to send information. On traffic stops, during neighborhood patrols and while interacting with citizens every day and night, deputies will hand out postage paid envelopes.

There is no return address. The envelope contains a blank sheet of paper and is pre-printed to my attention. I will personally review any tips I receive and assign them accordingly.

I am not sure how a person sleeps at night knowing who is shooting and killing. Write or type what you know about a violent crime and drop it in any mailbox.

Even the smallest spark of information can usually help us build a big fire ... let's burn some criminals.

No more excuses.
