El-Gendy celebrates 10 years

More than 200 people turned out Saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Florida Lung & Sleep Associates having a practice in Lehigh Acres. A health fair was held during the celebration.

Dr. Alaa El-Gendy, who operates the practice, has become well-known throughout southern Florida as well as Lehigh Acres.

El-Gendy and his children, all who help operate his practice on Lee Blvd. next to Walmart, have been working for several months to set up the celebration which included some 20 vendors which had set up tables with promotional materials.

Refreshments were also enjoy by those who stopped by.

Ironically, El-Gendy's son, Ahmed El-Gendy, read a proclamation as the honorary mayor of Lehigh Acres, before ribbons were cut to mark the anniversary. Many of the visitors posed behind the staff of El-Gendy's staff members as the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce conducted ribbon cutting ceremonies. The event began at 11 a.m. and continued to 2 p.m. and visitors came and went. Sandwiches and beverages were served outside to all that attended.

El-Gendy's Florida Lung & Sleep Associates were the first independent pulmonary and sleep center in Lehigh Acres in 2002.

Dr. El-Gendy has become well-known in Southwest Florida and is active in community events and has helped to sponsor activities such as the Lehigh Spring Festival.

When El-Gendy moved from New Jersey to Lehigh in 2002, he opened his office at 1420 Lee Blvd. in the shopping plaza between a pizza store and a Cuban bakery.

Coming with him was his four children who are now associated with him in his medical practice. From the original office, he moved to a former bank building and remodeled the entire interior.

El-Gendy was raised in Cairo, Egypt, and attended Al-Azhar University. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1982. He attended the graduate school at Ohio State University.

Later, El-Gendy completed a three-year internal medicine residency at the University of Critical Care and Sleep medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University.

During his residency and fellowship, he rotated through East Orange and Philadelphia Veterans Administration hospitals. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases and critical care.
