A lite shower, really a drizzle lasted for 10 minutes, but that didn't keep 21 children from fishing in last week's second annual Fishing Tournament put on by Florida Lung & Sleep Associates, which has offices on Lee Blvd. in Lehigh Acres.

"It was really a great day for these kids. You could tell they really loved to fish," said Dina El-Gendy, office manager at the Florida Lung & Sleep Associates. She and other family members were at the lake on the Mirror Lakes Golf Course for the event.

"The kids didn't get too wet because we supplied them with ponchos," said El-Gendy, laughing.

Brandon Herrero is given an award for catching the most fish award at the second annual Fishing Tournament for kids on June 1.

Not only were children casting out their lines, but many of the parents who came with the children fished, too, but the tourney was really for the children.

"Lots of children love to fish. It is a great hobby for them and we enjoy putting on this event. We plan to continue it next year," El-Gendy said.

The children caught bass, catfish, gator gar and blue gail, she said. The winner for the largest fish award was for an 18-inch bass.

"We gave out all kinds of awards. Not only for the most fish caught, but for the ugliest fish pulled in," El-Gendy said, laughing.

Her brother, Ahmed El-Gendy, also a member of the family business, was on hand to edge the young fishermen on. Ahmed is this year's Lehigh Acres honorary mayor.

Ahmed said that 21 kids had registered for the tournament. They got to keep the fishing poles and equipment they used and they received goodie bags and T-shirts. An officer from the Fish and Wildlife Commission, was also on hand and gave his time to talk with the families.

The youngsters were ready at 8 a.m. sharp when they cast their lines into the lake. The tournament lasted until noon. Lunch was served to the children and their families and then the awards were handed out.

The winners included:

Most fish caught award, Brandon Herrero; largest fish award, Michael Adams, Smallest Fish award, Charles Owen, Last Fishergirl Standing award, Abby Ricciardi and the ugliest Fish Award went to Logan Howard.

Dina El-Gendy said they wanted to t hank Mirror lakes Golf Club for their kindness to allow them to use their lake at the golf course.

"The lake that the kids fished in is the one with the most fish, according to them. And it's by Hole Number 10.

"I guess I've let the secret out," she said. "Now everyone will want to fish there."

Several Lehigh businesses also help to sponsor the fishing tourney, Dina El-Gundy said.
