Free pizzas mark Doctors Day

Lehigh's new Honorary Mayor Ahmed El-Gendy wasted no time in taking on his "duties" last week when he presented several large-sized pizzas to several Lehigh Acres doctors in honor of Doctors Appreciation Day Friday.

"Coming from the medical field, I thought it would be a nice gesture to show my and the community's appreciation for all the great doctors we have here in Lehigh," El-Gendy said.

So with his white sash on, identifying him as Lehigh's new honorary mayor, he and his brother-in-law, Ahmed Fahmy, delivered Papa John pizzas to several doctors throughout the community. Both work for Dr. Alaa El-Gendy, who operates Florida Lung & Sleep Associates at 2625 Lee Blvd. Mayor El-Gendy is the family firm's clinical research coordinator and his brother-in-law is in charge of marketing.

One of the first stops was to Dr. Michael Tucker's office off of Homestead Rd.

"Hey, thank you," Tucker told El-Gendy.

"This is a way for us to say thank you to you and all the other doctors in Lehigh," El-Gendy said.

The pizzas nearly filled El-Gendy's back seat as he and his brother-in-law made their rounds, trying to get all the pizzas to the many doctors' offices before noon.

"We took them large pizzas and told them it was for them, but there was enough for many of their staffs, too," El-Gendy laughed.

All the pizzas came from Papa John's, one of the largest orders for the pizza shop, in a while.

Papa John's pizza makers used olives in most cases and formed them on top of the pizzas with the message: "Happy Doctors Day."

"It was sort of like a Happy Birthday on a cake," El-Gendy said.

He became honorary mayor of Lehigh on Friday night at the Lehigh Spring Festival. He and four other were vying to buy votes (money) to raise the most for the Great Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce and other charities. Half went to the Chamber and the other went to the contestants' favorite charities. El-Gendy raised $2,680, around $165 more than the runner-up. His favorite charity was the Chest Institute, which he says will help many Lehigh folks.

El-Gendy said he believe it is the job of the honorary mayor and the Chamber to promote the good things in Lehigh. The Honorary Mayor Contest was sponsored by the Chamber. The pizzas were paid for by Florida Lung & Sleep Associates.

Lehigh general practice physicians who were given free pizzas in observation of Doctors Day included:

Dr. Chanun Park, Dr. Jerilee Lomas, Dr. William Richardson, Dr. Michael Tucker, Dr. Elmer Toro, Dr. Bernd Raphael, Dr. Randy Kenefic (Radiology Regional), Dr. Pedro Ylisastigui, Dr. Michael Jaindl, Dr. Lazaro Bravo, Sadiq Al Nakeeb, Dr. Tasha Wallace, Dr. Yamila Delgado, and Dr. Luis Cardentey.
