Help! I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up

February 6, 2009 - Patrick Comer
Falls Prevention Training Now Available-Free

Did you know that in 2008 Lee County Emergency Workers, including Lehigh Acres Firefighters, responded to 8,313 fall-related incidents? Falls are a serious problem for seniors. They can lead to broken bones, infections and even death. But fortunately seniors can reduce their risk by improving their strength, balance and flexibility.

In an effort to help our senior citizens retain their mobility and freedom, and to hopefully reduce fall-related accidents the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District is now offering free training to seniors to reduce fall-related injuries. And there is even training available now to teach seniors how to get up on their own if they do fall.

Learn Easy Movements to Improve Your Balance

Ask yourself, do I want to get on and off the toilet on my own? Do I want to get into and out of a chair on my own? Do I want to avoid losing my independence?

Your Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District is now offering three new classes for seniors. • Balance, Strength and Mobility • Balance, Strength and Mobility for People With Mobility Limitations • How to Get Up From a Fall

These are not jazzersize-type classes. There is no music or fast moves. Rather, the 45-60 minute training sessions teaches you some simple movements to improve your balance, strength and flexibility.

For more information call Patrick Comer at the fire department at 303-5318.

2009 Firefighter Calendars

The 2009 Firefighter Calendars are in and available at each of the five fire stations in Lehigh. The calendars are just $10 and the money raised goes to The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. We hope you will help us help the youngest members of our community. And besides great photos of some of our firefighters, the calendar is full of tips to keep your family safe.
